At Instructure, we believe in the power of people to grow and succeed throughout their lives. Our goal is to amplify that power by creating intuitive products that simplify learning and personal development, facilitate meaningful relationships, and inspire people to go further in their education and careers.
We do this by giving smart, creative, passionate people opportunities to create awesome. And that's where you come in:
We're hiring a Manager, Engineering to lead one team (up to eight engineers) within the Assessment Group at Instructure. You'll own your team's day-to-day execution, help your engineers grow, and make sure your team's work connects to the bigger picture of what we're building.
This is a hands-on people leadership role. You won't write production code day to day, but you'll stay close enough to the codebase to guide technical decisions, review architecture, and unblock your team when things get hard.
What you'll do
Lead a team of engineers, guiding their day-to-day work and removing blockers so they can deliver.
Run regular, effective one-on-ones with your direct reports and give continuous, honest feedback.
Own delivery for your team. Keep work on track, adjust priorities fast, and protect your team's health while you do it.
Mentor your engineers against our engineering competency framework and build a plan so no one person is a single point of failure.
Hire for your team: define the role, build the interview panel, run debriefs, and make the call.
Review RFCs and tech specs your team writes, and co-sign off on them.
Hold your team accountable to our engineering quality and process standards, including code review, incident response, and the tech radar.
Track your team's delivery and reliability metrics, and coach your engineers on what "meeting" and "exceeding" expectations looks like.
Partner with product, design, and other engineering teams to plan work and connect it to Instructure's broader strategy.
Manage your team's spend and flag budget risks early.
What we're looking for
Experience managing software engineers, ideally with a background at the senior engineer level or above before moving into management.
A track record of delegating rather than doing the work yourself, while staying technical enough to guide your team's decisions.
Comfort giving direct, caring feedback, including the hard conversations.
Experience running a hiring process from job requisition to offer.
Strong written and verbal communication. You can explain a technical tradeoff to your team and to a non-technical stakeholder.
Get in on all the awesome at Instructure!
We offer competitive, meaningful benefits in every country where we operate. While they vary by location, here's a general idea of what you can expect:
Competitive compensation, plus all full-time employees participate in our ownership program - because everyone should have a stake in our success.
Flexible work culture. Our remote, hybrid and in-office collaboration spaces vary by role, team and location.
Generous time off, including local holidays and our annual “Dim the Lights” period in late December, when teams are encouraged to step back and recharge based on departmental needs.
Comprehensive wellness programs and mental health support
Learning and development resources, including professional development tools and tuition reimbursement, to support your growth
The technology and tools you need to do your best work
Motivosity employee recognition program
A culture rooted in inclusivity, support, and meaningful connection
We believe in hiring great people and treating them right. The more diverse we are, the better our ideas and outcomes.
Instructure is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We comply with applicable employment and anti-discrimination laws in every country where we operate.
All employees must pass a background check as part of the hiring process. To help protect our teams and systems, we’ve implemented identity verification measures. Candidates may be asked to verify their legal name, current physical location, and provide a valid contact number and residential address, in accordance with local data privacy laws.
Any attempt to misrepresent personal or professional information will result in disqualification.
Matched by role category. Review each posting’s requirements before applying.
