# Remote job timezone restrictions: what to check before applying

A timezone requirement describes when you may need to work; an applicant-country restriction describes where the role may be performed. One does not establish the other. A role can match your country and still require hours that do not fit your schedule.

## 01 / Look for a concrete overlap window

Illustrative wording: ‘Four hours of overlap with Pacific time’ names a scheduling condition, not permission to work from every country with convenient hours. ‘Must be based in an EU country’ is a location condition, even when it appears near a timezone statement. Record both separately.

Terms such as ‘EMEA hours’, ‘US business hours’, and ‘flexible schedule’ can leave the actual working window unresolved. Ask for the expected days, start and end times, and the reference timezone. Do not infer a full schedule from the headquarters address.

## 02 / Confirm how the schedule is expressed

A named local timezone and a fixed UTC offset may be used differently in a posting. Rather than guessing how seasonal clock changes affect the role, ask the employer whether the working window follows a local clock or a fixed offset. Confirm the arrangement for the periods relevant to your application.

## 03 / Review obligations beyond normal working hours

On-call coverage, customer-facing shifts, travel and regular office attendance can add requirements beyond a simple overlap statement. Separate mandatory coverage from occasional requests. A remote label does not eliminate travel or scheduled attendance when the employer explicitly requires it.

## 04 / Ask for an example week

Try: ‘What are the mandatory overlap hours, which timezone defines them, and how frequently do shifts or on-call duties occur?’ A concrete example week is more useful than assuming that ‘flexible’ means fully asynchronous.

CanIBeHired can surface explicit timezone language, but it does not assess your availability or convert that language into a legal or geographic eligibility decision. Use the source passage to make your own schedule check and confirm unresolved details with the employer.

## Your next step

Start with the stated applicant geography, then review the source’s working-hour conditions.
